The captor of this fish is going to post details later, but can you people tell if it is a genuine roach or a hybrid?

Ditto to that Chris Plumb.. Theres a little to much red in the eyes and the fins with a slight hump to the back..

From the photos it almost looks like two seperate fish..

I'm wavering a little though from closer examination of the top link - it dosn't look as Ruddy. It's a good fish, 3lb's+? It could be a Roach caught from a very clear water.. Toughie.

There has to be a fair amount of Rudd in it! - look at the mouth.

Hard to tell from that photo, but it looks as if the lower lip is longer than the top one.

Sorry, I only looked at the first picture. What worries me is that that fish is incredibly good condition!

When I have pulled out big old Roach, they all seem "weather" worn.

I'd say that's definitely a roach, dorsal and pectoral fins are in the right place, colouring is good for a Roach and in the bottom photo it's plain that the top lip protrudes slightly..........

It's hard to be accurate, but it looks to have about 44 scales along the lateral line, which IIRC is about right. (bottom photo)

Also pretty sure that both photo's are of the same fish - both show a slight 2 tone effect.

Yepp, I'd almost put money on it - only way to be sure would be to kill it & examine the pharyngeal teeth .

As Dant said - it's a toughie, but I'd be proud to catch it & claim it as a Roach. Well done to the angler concerned. :clap2:

Here is a roach/rudd hybrid for comparison. Caught it at a Sussex Reservoir.

A 5 lb fish of similar appearance was found dead at this venue - A post mortem carried out by the EA confirmed that the 5 lb fish was also a roach-rudd hybrid

It's a strange fish! An absolute giant too, well done to the angler. The two photos look like different fish, if I'd only seen the first one I've have said it was a roach but it looks the right shape for a rudd in the second pic. In fact, the fish looks like it's a photoshop job, welding the front of a rudd to the back of a roach - I've never seen a fish quite like it!

In conclusion - no idea

Hi All,

Well very hard to tell 100%, but i would say that it is a Roach.

It would be interesting to know the weight and what water or type of water it was caught from.

Great fish.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.
