That guy who took a spirit level on the plane, and said the bubble should move as the plane went up one side of the globe, and down the other. It didn't, so it must be flat!

Do you remember an article by Dick Walker on the industrial archaeology of spirit levels ?

Entitled "Buckden's Breamers" it was hilarious - "the best bubbles for spirit levels come from bream, and collecting them at the waterside and transferring them unbroken to the glass tube in the level is becoming a lost art"

I think it appeared in an April edition of "Angling"

Now you've mentioned it, I do vaguely remember it Dave. I wish my memory was as good as yours.

I used to like that magazine, a shame that the quality of those around now is poor by comparison.

Spirit Levels are sometimes called "Fish Farts".  Never knew the true reason though!! (or if indeed this is in fact the true reason??)

I just assumed it to be a Colloquialism.

Here's a bit more "Science Bit" - The Curvature of the glass tube is on a precise 9 metre radius. (According to my college lecturer many years ago)

I imagine the patch of earth where he landed must be a bit flatter now.

I always thought that the curvature of the vial varied according to the length and accuracy of the spirt level. But then I'm no college lecturer.

Surely if the vial is curved it will not show a true level ? Never understood why the bubble is so big either it must be effected by surface tension on the glass? And why its not got more lines so you can deliberately put something at a slope

The length of the vial can vary but the Curvature is always the same (on all the good ones anyway)

A Brick layer's Level (on a wooden base) for instance doesn't need to be as accurate as one (on a metal base) required for say leveling an engineering machine tool.
