I remember meeting her Majesty at Wolverhampton race course, when I owned a race horse in 1996.

"Have a few shillings on Highborn Ma'am"  - He duly Won the Queen Elizabeth all weather stakes at 7/1.

Before I changed branches to a Naval Meteorologist and Oceanographer I was previously a naval photographer back in the early 70s and covering the Queens arrival after sailing into Portsmouth on the Royal Yacht; and I got told off after flashing a Flash on my camera at the Queen; camera flashes were one of her dislikes but I didn’t realise. If I had known I would have not used the flash.

However; I got some great shots of the Queen and her entourage which appeared in the Navy News and also in the Daily Mirror though and I got some good complements from my PR officer.

Being a Naval Photographer I was free to move around fairly freely whereas the civilian photographers had to all keep behind their barriers.

Bola.   One of the  greatest fishing guides ever to grace this planet.  (Subhan was another)

Bola was our guide for our week on the Cauvery after  mahseer.  Under his guidance  we fished  ragi, chilwah and freshwater crab ,catching many mahseer but nothing over 16 lb.  Saad Bin Jung fished with us for one day, but fared no better.  

I saw enough of what Bola could do from crab-catching through mahseer-finding to cooking delicious curries on the river  bank to realise this was a master of his craft.

I never met him.

I used to fish a way upstream of the JLR camps, but Bola and Subhan were part of angling history.

Presumably, the old boy was dumped out of a job when the state closed the forest reserves to angling.
