  1. During the winter months theres nothing i like more than a good old traditional bucket of bread mash. And bread on the hook. What i do is walk the stretch before i start and bait all the likely looking spots, If the rivers a bit pacy i will use a bait dropper to get the mash on the bottom. This way you will give the chub time to find the bait and get feeding confidently. I will give each swim about half an hour if i dont get a fish i move on to the next one. If theres anything in a swim i find you will uasully get it pretty quick. on aririval at each new swim i will intruduce a bit more mash by hand. Keep the rigs as simple as possible, Mostly i just use a simple swan link ledger. You can add or remove weight to it according to the current. Trotting can be a good way of working the swim aswell. Other baits that are good in the winter are cheese paste and luncheon meat. and garlic sausage. The beauty of smelly baits is you can often get a take from a likely spot without putting any other freebies in. As the bait alone is enough to attract the fish to take. Dont forget that you will often get a better stamp of fish at dusk or just after dark
  2. I think its possibly a case of a novice angler not weighing his catch properly. Probably didnt zero the scales or something. If he was fishing for perch surely he would of had an idea what a specimen was, A seven pound perch would be quite a site to see
  3. I think a true angler is someone who can turn their hand to any type of fishing or prepared to have a go. One that has respect for all others around him and the enviorement in which he fishes. Be prepared to help others less knowledgable and also be prepared never to stop learning. To be able to strike a balance between fishing and the rest of his life so as other aspects do not suffer eg family friends and work. Respect the fact that everyone has their favourite approach to fishing and as long as they are fishing within the rules respect that.
  4. In thirty years of fishing i have only been given grief once. I was fishing at abberton one afternoon and i was the only person there at the time what was strange for abbo in those days, When this car pulled up on the causeway and two guys got out with a girl. They started telling me how i was destroying the enviorement and all that. Now i had a couple of mackeral baits laying on my cool box. And one of them said "see those fish you have killed today" i tried to explain to him that they were the bait and i hadnt killed them but he wasnt having it. Then the girls starts ranting and raving at me about fox hunting and harecourseing etc. By this time im starting to get the arse ache with them. Ive never been the most docile bloke at te best of times but i managed to keep my temper with them. Then one of them starts walking towards my rods "Im going to cut you lines" he said " If you do that you will be no better than me" I replied "What do you mean" he said. Well im thinking what a thick tw@t. And you could see him thinking about it but he obviously didnt have enough grey matter to realise the concequences of his actions. Anyway has luck would have it two of my mates turned up to fish at that moment and they kinda shut up and got back in their car. But thats the only time i have had any grief on the bank, Just lucky it didnt get nasty. As anglers we are taking part in our pastime and we are abiding with the law, Nobody has a right to interfere with us. If you cant handle any situation on your own just call the old bill and report it
  5. If the river has got colour anything smelly eg spiced meat. cheese paste garlic sausage.pepperami. Asuming you are after chub and barbel. Even small chunks of lamprey and smelts are good for chub
  6. We always got the blame for the lead poisening of swans over the years because of the ocaisions swans were rescued with line and the odd bit of shot. But what about the wildfowlers blasting shot up in the air and missing their targets. It all came down somewhere. Mainly in the lake where swans are feeding. Not being funny but the average cartridge is about 30 grams and thats a lot of size six or seven shot. More than most of us lose in a season
  7. If the river is moving, Then the pike if they are having it will be lying up in the slacks waiting for any thing coming by. Go with the flow with deads under the float. Trotting style. No point fishing a static in a bit of a pace it dont look right.
  8. Im lucky if i get mine before midday, Long gone are the days of getting it before setting off for work.
  9. Agree the waveney is a good chub river, Havent been up there for a couple of winters but its worth a go. Might give it a look myself in the new year.
  10. I wish i still had my old mk 1 escort
  11. No need for all this. A good combination of quality outdoor kit is all you need. Are we all going soft or summit lol
  12. I dont night fish in the winter now, When i think back to when i had the carp bug and look at some of the pics of frosty mornings and snow i must of been mad, When ever possible i would set the rods up as close to the bivvy as i could, Sometimes even with the butts entering the door of the bivvy so i wouldnt have to stager about in the dark on a slippery bank. Theres nothing worse than those first few seconds when you get a take in the night and you jump up to quick and loose you balance. As for sleeping i would just wear my normal clothes in the bag, And keep the wellies by the rods so i could slip them on once i was composed. I even sometimes use to put down a old piece of that fake turf, The type you get on veggie stalls to keep me from getting my feet to dirty before i got me boots on, Total maddness thinking back now, I will stick with my pike and chub in my old age lol
  13. I think its all a bit fishy. Wouldnt he of bailed out if his wing fell off?
  14. Tigers are a killer bait when used properly. Carp love them. As long as they are prepared properly they are ok. In my carp fishing days back in the eighties i use to mix them with my hemp. About one third tigers to two thirds hemp and mix in a tin of condenced milk. The trouble with them is like most particle baits the fish can become preocupied on them. I have often wondered why carp like them so much. I supose maybe its the crunch they like possibly think they might be small snails or something
  15. The back ground music was a bit dodgey, Sounded like it was taken from a adult film lol
  16. Cant a good old chub when the weathers bad, Well done. From my experience there one fish that are easier to catch in the winter than the summer
  17. The deepest i have taken a pike is just over 40 feet. At one of my local resivoirs.
  18. If in doubt Get a copper toby out.
  19. What works one day doesnt always work the next. Vary your style. Slow fast jerk creep. Look for the likely spots that pike and perch might be lurking. Keep changing lures and try again. Even try wobbling deadbaits. Keep a look out for any fry aswell. The pike wont be far away.
  20. Colonel Sanders air force really need to learn how to fly.
  21. Oh yeah That was more a slip of the finger i think. Even i can spell the.
