What scares you when night fishing?

...and we have them at a water I fish in East Sussex. There are some big roach-rudd hybrids in there, and in winter you have to fish into the dusk to catch them. The boar become active about then, but rarely show themselves. My mates can hear them shuffling and snuffling in the undergrowth, but I cannot (getting deafer still with age). However, I can smell them! Not as strong as peccary (S American wild pigs) but detectable.

I'm flying out to fish in warthog country this evening. :)

I must tell my son 'Le phacochere' is one of his favourite animals, along with 'le blaireau mange-miel' (the honey badger, one tough little bugger).

Tight lines Vagabond et bon route. I won't wish you luck, it 'bad luck' to say 'good luck' to a hunter in France so here is a heartfelt Merde!.

PS We will of course expect pics upon your return.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Your absolutly right, I HATE mosquitoes with a passion.

It all started when fishing in France 6 years ago. It was the first time my mate and I had ventured on to the continent to do some carp fishing. All week long we were eaten alive day and night. Just on my mates right arm we counted over 35 bites in one night!!

Despite the the use of a repelent called 'jungle formula' the little buggers did not stop for 7 days and nights solid. What a nightmare.

Since then I will NOT sleep untill I know that anything in my bivvy 100% dead and there is not trace of a mozzie. If I hear a buzzzzzzzz during the night I cant get back to sleep til' its dead. Probably a bit extreme but since then I serriously won't go to sleep unless I am sure there is nothing buzzing around me at night. Most of you will probably laugh your heads off but thats the way it is for me!! :D:lol:

My guess is that the first is a starlight being waved about.

Followed by an LED headlamp.

Something like that. I'm pretty sure about the LEDs.

:D Your right there. My wife works in a Pharmacy and when I first started going to France many years ago reccommended the same thing. Repellant, the buggers used to queue up o drink it . Like you, did to not go to sleep and would sit around wth a torch swatting them until they had been exterminated. The horse flies could be bad too, especially around Boulancourt. The other that was scary was when you shone a light into the woods behind you and all you could see was loads of red eyes.Might have been a reflection of my own though after thewine

Looks like something has been splashed on the lens and subsequently dried or crystallised
