Does The Otter Deserve Such Bad Press?

Anglers' Net

Your comments are a little confusing to me (excuse me I'm a simple soul). Your river is obviously in a very poor state due to Man's interventions yet, otters and cormorants are apparently having a whale of a time on the fish that the anglers can't catch.

Is it me or does that sound a bit odd? If the fish predators (the visible ones at least) are thriving then surely there can't be too much wrong with the river...natural or not, the otters have decided that there are enough fish in the area to take up holt.

I'm sure if you contacted John Wilson et al they could put up some signs to advise the otters to relocate to some "natural" rivers...even SSSIs!...and national parks. Good luck with that plan....I'd love to come and survey the results of that!

It's had effect on the wensum so thats good enough for me, there numbers are still on the up here and it don't like the thought of pushing it to that stage to find out.

Looks as if man has found another way to reduce their numbers

Thank goodness for small mercies :) this chemical has probably worked its way up through the foodchain? If so i wonder why there was no mention of it in the wensum roach study previously quoted, a study by the EA which says there are less fish as 'we made your rivers cleaner.' Ever the cynic :)

'The current report adds to some scientists' concern about the feminisation of male animals, according to CHEM Trust. For example, previous studies in the UK have linked now-restricted POPs with male fish producing eggs in their testes and female egg-yolk protein.'

I'm glad the general concensus is, we don't seem to have a problem with Otters. What a lovely bunch.

Surely the problem of using an apex predator as an 'indicator species' is that by the time that species show any indications of a problem the whole chain below it has collapsed.

The short-sightedness of toy-town conservationists is breathtaking.

What would you suggest as an indicator species Steve?

If the apex pred can't thrive, then the prey numbers are very low. On the other hand if the pred is doing well, and spreading, then there must be plenty of prey species around.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

As long as anglers believe (and are led to believe) that there's a secret organisation breeding and releasing otters all over the place with no thought for the consequences, we're never going to get anywhere, and will just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

There are no toy town conservationists, there is no secret organisation. 117 otters were released in a couple of areas in the 90s; none since. They are spreading and reclaiming their natural habitat by natural means. The fact that in the meantime humans have filled every puddle with thousands of fish isn't their fault.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

The tell tale signs of a group of Poles. Did you see the characteristic rectangular scorch marks on the ground nearby?

no no no, thats below the belt as the trust have been paid 30,000 quid to rid the uk of that problem, with their hug a pole campaign.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Not sure what all the fuss was is about on this thread concerning the lippy carp. I found this on the PAG website and so it's Otters that remove the lips from fish not anglers.

John.

Simple by the time that species show any indications of a problem the whole chain below it would have collapsed.

As for an indicator species WHY do we need one that wasn't there before. And we DID NOT ask for them to be brought back !! Was we asked NO we wasn't. An APEX predator was brought back without thought of what would happen. Why because they look pretty - we never see the bloody things !!

Hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on stock fish , GONE ! WHERE ??

Why must we keep being told that we must prove without any doubt that these bloody animals are at fault !

When we did not have the losses before the release of otters and now have losses that are costing thousands of pounds not just to Anglers ,Fisheries and Farmers ( That used to rent rivers to angling clubs that because of massive fish losses they no longer want) with fisheries closing because its to expensive to replace the lost stock. Accept it Otters are at fault !!

You prove to me it ain't OTTERS.

END OF RANT and I'm not coming back to this thread.
